Planet Earth

The small blue and green planet we call home is a very special and unique place. We live on the only planet in our solar system where life is known to exist. All life exists within a thin film of air, water, and soil about 15 km deep. A layer of ozone molecules in the upper atmosphere protects all life on Earth from the harmful rays of the sun. The natural ozone levels in the atmosphere allow for an appropriate amount of harmful solar radiation to be absorbed before it can reach the Earth's surface.

All life on Earth is adapted to this filtered amount of solar radiation. Therefore, any changes into the amount of radiation that penetrates the Earth's surface as a result of decreased amount of ozone in the stratosphere can have implications for human health, the welfare of all ecosystems and, potentially, the global climate.

Satellite measurements in recent years have provided clear evidence that chlorine and bromine originating from human-made compounds deplete the ozone layer in the stratosphere.
